AI’s jargon is multiplying faster than the models themselves. For leaders, this creates a problem. But have no fear. You don’t need to become an engineer, but you do need to speak the language. Otherwise, you risk wasting budget on hype, or worse:

Here’s a glossary of 10 terms that will give you fluency without overwhelm. Each comes with a practical example so you can recognize the concept and know why it matters.
Why I built this cheat sheet
In the past month alone, I’ve been in three meetings where senior execs whispered to me afterward: “What exactly is RAG?” or “Can you explain what they meant by agentic AI?” These are smart, capable leaders, but the language of AI is moving so fast that nobody wants to appear behind the curve.
It's fun to be fluent in trivia that's trending. However, this is more about confidence. Being able to say, “Yes, I know what that means” without flinching. This glossary is meant to be that decoder ring (apologies for the 1930s radio show reference).
Your AI glossary in plain English
1. Agentic AI
Definition: AI systems that don’t just respond, but take initiative and act toward goals.
Example: Instead of drafting an email for you, an agentic AI might draft it, send it, and then schedule the follow-up meeting automatically. The shift from assistant to operator has huge implications for risk and governance. It's also a term that gets thrown around very loosely. Even with ChatGPT's Agent mode or products like Lindy, many thought leaders in the space still say, "We aren't quite there" when it comes to true AI agents.
2. Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)
Definition: AI systems where humans review or guide decisions before final action.
Example: A hospital uses AI to draft diagnoses, but a doctor must approve before telling a patient. For leaders, the question is: where do you want human judgment as a safeguard, and where are you comfortable letting AI run? Pro Tip: When it comes to customer experience, the lack of a HITL is already becoming a huge misstep for many companies.
3. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
Definition: A technique where AI pulls data from an external knowledge base before answering.
Example: A bank’s chatbot can pull real policy documents before responding to customers, reducing hallucinations. This is one of the fastest-growing ways to make AI both more accurate and more trustworthy. In other words, a RAG is much more surgical on where it draws trusted data, whereas your off-the-shelf LLM includes all the randomness of the internet.
4. Prompt Engineering
Definition: The practice of crafting inputs to get better AI outputs.
Example: Asking “Explain this to me like I’m a CFO” often yields sharper results than a generic “Explain this.” Leaders don’t need to master prompt tricks, but knowing the difference between a lazy prompt and a smart one matters. E.g. If you use AI the way that you used to use Google, you won't get very impressive results.
5. Multimodal AI
Definition: Models that can process and combine text, images, video, and audio.
Example: An insurance AI that can read a damage report, analyze uploaded photos, and calculate a payout estimate in one workflow. Multimodal systems are pushing AI into roles that used to require whole teams.
6. Vector Database
Definition: Specialized storage that makes it easy to search data by meaning, not just keywords. A vector database is often conflated with RAG because the two usually work together. The database stores information in a way AI can understand, while RAG is the method that actually pulls the right pieces into a response.
Example: Instead of searching “Nike running shoe,” a vector database can pull up results for “best sneakers for a marathon” because it understands context. These are the backbone of modern AI search and recommendation systems.
7. Foundation Model
Definition: Large, pre-trained AI models that serve as the base for customization.
Example: GPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok are foundation models. A pharma company might build its own drug-discovery AI on top of one, saving years of development and tens of millions of dollars.
8. Guardrails
Definition: Controls that limit AI outputs to prevent harmful or off-brand results.
Example: Think of guardrails as the “filters” or “safety rails” that companies add on top of AI. For instance, a customer service chatbot might be prevented from giving medical advice, or an internal tool might block employees from uploading sensitive data.
9. Inference
Definition: The moment an AI system does its job and produces an output.
Example: Typing a prompt into ChatGPT and getting a reply is inference. A simpler way to think of it: training an AI model is like teaching a student, while inference is the student answering a test question. Inference is also where your AI spending shows up. Every answer costs computing power.
10. Explainability (XAI)
Definition: Methods for making AI’s decision process understandable to humans.
Example: A bank’s credit AI can’t just say “loan denied." It must show that the denial was based on credit score, not zip code. Think of it as a GPS not just showing you the destination, but also why it picked a certain route based on closed streets, traffic, or stops on the way. This goes beyond common sense and involves trust, accountability, and regulation.
Fluency beats hype
You don’t need to memorize every acronym in AI. But fluency in these 10 terms will help you cut through hype, ask sharper questions, and lead with confidence. The language of AI is the new language of business, and leaders who speak it will have the edge.
